"Can't live (if living is without this tape)"
"Madeline gently picks, plucks & strums her guitar, looping sections and adding ghostly reverberated vocals on top. A beautiful and epic 19 minute long track makes up the first half of the Minotaur cassette, the other half belonging to OHDO (Hunter Dragon)."
-Spring Break Tapes
"The first thing you'll hear on The Minotaur is a sound resembling the striking of a match. It is the sound of illumination, and right away Sister Grotto is attempting to set the blank, obsidian canvas of cassette tape aglow, lighting up a winding labyrinth that lies ahead. But the fact that she does so with a matchstick and not something else like the flipping of a light switch seems important somehow. Although this split tape does contain within it a lot of electronically derived elements and technological manipulations (notably delay and reverse-delay pedal effects, drum machines, and synthesizers), something about the approach from both Sister Grotto and OHDO, alias of Hunter Dragon, feels very hands-on. The first of a forthcoming series of split cassettes for Tinyamp, The Minotaur is loosely based on the Greek myth of Minos, which gives the maze of music both artists designed a nice thematic backdrop, and you really get a sense for characters within it - intrepid explorers, often lost, at times melancholic. Johnston sets a dimly-lit tone with her dark, melodic guitar work that twists and twirls back on itself while her fragile voice loops and layers beautiful harmonies above."
